The ultimate guide for walks, hiking and mountain trekking on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, Spain

Gran Canaria is a paradise for hill walking in the Canaries, with inhabited cave villages, lake side walks, spectacular mountain scenery and wonderful flora & fauna especially in the Spring.  There are a great variety of hikes on outstanding trails, many of these are off-the-beaten-track and the climate is excellent for trekking.

"Rambling Roger's your man.  In these days of instant gratification, it is rare to find anyone so devoted to a task, which for him has been a true labour of love.  He is Gran Canaria's Wainwright and deserves similar recognition"

I am are aware that there are already some hiking books in English about walking and trekking on Gran Canaria, but none written by a resident with personal experience of the hiking routes on this island.

My Guide 'Don’t leave Gran Canaria without seeing it' has 20 circular and 5 routes from A to B with local bus times included.

The great attraction of hiking on Gran Canaria is the tremendous variety of walks on such a relatively small island, and it also has the climate to hike most of the year.

There are a great number of footpaths and tracks on the island with spectacular views and very varied scenery, including lakes, forests and occupied troglodyte villages ( see our photo album ).

My advice to all visitors to Gran Canaria and the title of my Guide is:  ‘Don’t leave Gran Canaria without seeing it’.

I have been hiking with Roger for over a year now and enjoyed every single walk.  He knows Gran Canaria really well and goes out of his way to design the most fascinating hikes.  I especially appreciate the variety of his walks in terms of length and degree of difficulty.  He has something to offer for everybody

Rural Gran Canaria is a complete contrast to the major resorts of Puerto Rico, Playa del Ingles and MaspalomasBeaches and night life are left behind for the peace and tranquillity of the mountains.

Each walk includes GPS co-ordinates for all major intersections etc.  A GPS is not essential for any of the walks but in my opinion it is an important navigational aid, see:  Garmin® GPS links.

Gran Canaria is one of the 7 main Canary Islands

... and is part of Spain and the EEC therefore the currency here is the Euro.  Gran Canaria's coast holiday resorts have been a popular holiday destination for many years, but few British visitors have hiked the interior.  Gran Canaria is just a four hour flight away, in the same time-zone as the UK and hence the ideal destination for a weeks walking holiday - cheap last minute flights to Gran Canaria's airport Las Palma ( LPA ) are often found via:  www.skyscanner.net

There are now several good rural hotels on Gran Canaria, and these are leading to more people wanting to spend their well earned vacations in the unspoilt and rural part of the island rather than on the south coast and the large hotels in Maspalomas and Puerto Rico.

There is also a network of rural houses, and even cave houses, to rent for families who really want to experience the peace and quiet of the Canarian countryside.

Fataga village in the
southern mountains

 - Fataga village in the southern mountains, Canary Island, Canaries -

The highest point of the island Pico de las Nieves is approx 1950 metres ( approx 6,000 feet ) above sea level and you can drive to it in under an hour and a half from leaving the coast.

Gran Canaria lives up to its nickname of a miniature continent...

The island is very green and agricultural in the north, the centre has forests, lakes and several villages of inhabited cave houses.  The south has some spectacular scenery across uninhabited ravines and canyons, known as Barrancos, and there are several large volcanic craters, known as Calderas.

Many of the footpaths you will be walking on are old donkey tracks, known as Camino Reales, there used to be a large network of tracks connecting all the villages and towns together, often by much shorter and direct routes than the modern roads that have replaced them.

The beauty of the real Gran Canaria is in the heart of the island and is unimaginable from the motorway that connects the airport to large resorts of hotels and apartments, bars and restaurants etc. in the barren south and east of the island.
