The ultimate guide for walks, hiking and mountain trekking on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, Spain

Gran Canaria is a paradise for hill walking in the Canaries, with inhabited cave villages, lake side walks, spectacular mountain scenery and wonderful flora & fauna especially in the Spring.  There are a great variety of hikes on outstanding trails, many of these are off-the-beaten-track and the climate is excellent for trekking.

"I have been hiking with Roger for over a year now and enjoyed every single walk.
He knows Gran Canaria really well and goes out of his way to design the most fascinating hikes. I especially appreciate the variety of his walks in terms of length and degree of difficulty.
He has something to offer for everybody"

Part Example of how I Intinerise my Rambling Roger Walks

All the walks in my Guide:  'Don’t leave Gran Canaria without seeing it' fit onto 4 sides of paper.  The walk is titled, a brief overview of the walk is given, including its grade and length, also a map indicating the route.

My Guide also includes how to get to the start of the walk and how to get home afterwards, including bus times etc.

GPS co-ordinates are given for all major junctions and points of interest, and the most important heights are also included.

The time of each stage and the cumulative time of the walk is stated, as well as the conditions underfoot.  Compass directions are given as necessary, as are suggested picnic stops, shops and restaurants.  Also included are the cumulative totals for the complete walk at the end of the notes.

Walk 14 - The Santa Lucia Circle via Rosiana and Ansite

Please find below typical information you will find in my Walking Guide including directions, pictures and map ( PDF document shows the exact layout ):

Demo Walk - The Santa Lucia Circle via Rosiana and Ansite

 - Demo Walk - The Santa Lucia Circle via Rosiana and Ansite, full walk edition is available to buy in the Guide: 'Don’t leave Gran Canaria without seeing it' -

The circular route takes you out of the town past many small farms, with fantastic views down the Tirajana valley, then towards an interesting man made lake, La Sorreuda, and to a pre Hispanic natural monument, Ansite, and then back to Santa Lucia by a different route.

Sections 9 and 12 of the walk are often rather overgrown, long trousers are recommended there.

The start of the walk is the church plaza in Santa Lucia, this can be reached by car, following the GC 60 from San Fernando to San Bartolome and then turning right on the GC 65 to Santa Lucia, the drive takes just over an hour.

The start can also be reached by the Global bus services 18 and 34.  No. 18 leaves at 08.00 and runs from Maspalomas to San Bartolome arriving at 09.00, then the No. 34 from San Bartolome to Santa Lucia, the 09.30 bus arrives in Santa Lucia at about 09.50.

Santa Lucia is approx 690 metres above sea level

GPS co-ordinates:   27.54.750 North    15.32.500 West

1:-  There are shops in Santa Lucia if you need supplies, also if you arrived by bus the main bus stop is outside bar Guatiboa, so you would need to walk back the way the bus travelled for about 200 metres.

From the plaza beneath the church head N.E. away from the main road, through a nice park, which does have public toilets, then turn right onto Calle Leopoldo Matos walking uphill for about 100 metres.  You must then turn left onto Calle Baldomero Argente, this is a super street with many old houses some of which are tastefully restored, 3 minutes later bear right at a Y junction, and in under 10 minutes you find you are on Calle Taginaste.

Near the Aula de Naturaleza

 - Near the Aula de Naturalesa above Santo Lucia, San Bartolome, Gran Canaria, Spain -

At the junction opposite the road sign bear left up a few steps onto a small plaza, continue uphill on a small road, follow a wooden sign for El Palmeral del Valle, and a few metres later turn right uphill N.E. at the wooden sign for La Aula de Naturaleza.

3 minutes later turn left uphill North onto a concrete road which will take you up to the Aula, 5 minutes later ignore a footpath on your right signposted to Cruz de Siglo.

The building you then come to is ‘La Aula de Naturaleza' also known as Las Tederas, this is like an outward bound/education centre for local children, it has taken you about 20 minutes from the Church Plaza.

Approx walking time 20 minutes, Altitude approx 800m

GPS co-ordinates:   27.54.830 North    15.32.020 West

2:-  Keep straight on past the Aula, heading North, until you come to a large junction.  There is a sign here for Camino Rural a Las Vueltas de Adeje, there is a chain across the track ahead of you, there are footpaths on both sides of the chain, your footpath heads downhill to the left of the chain.  Follow this narrow footpath downhill through some fields to a dirt road, where you must turn right uphill.

The Oasis at Mundillo

 - Mountain walkers at the Oasis at Mundillo, Santa Lucia, Gran Canaria, Spain -

10 minutes after the large junction, turn left in front of a nice house, head West on a footpath, following the line of a small metal water tube.  3 minutes later you descend to El Mundillo on a super paved steep downhill path ( GPS N 27.55.020 W 15.32.200 ), at a yellow house with green garage doors, No. 7, bear right, follow this track over a small barranco, bearing right N.W. up towards some pink walls, as you walk under a natural canopy into a super Oasis of palm trees, this is a great shady place for a picnic stop, about 15 minutes from the Aula.

Approx walking time 35 minutes, Altitude approx 770m

GPS co-ordinates:   27.55.050 North    15.32.220 West

The Cumulative totals for this walk are:

Approx walking time 5 hr 00 mins, Altitude approx 690m

GPS co-ordinates:   27.54.750 North    15.32.500 West

Approx length 18 Km, Ascent and Descent 600 metres
