The ultimate guide for walks, hiking and mountain trekking on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, Spain

Gran Canaria is a paradise for hiking in the Canaries, with inhabited cave villages, lake side walks, spectacular mountain scenery and wonderful flora & fauna especially in the Spring.  There are a great variety of hikes on outstanding trails, many of these are off-the-beaten-track and the climate is excellent for trekking.

Hikers reviews of the Guide

Below are a few comments from fellow hikers and mountain walkers who have purchased my Guide 'Don’t leave Gran Canaria without seeing it':

This is the best walking guide we have ever used.  All the directions are really easy to follow with photographs to help with some of the less obvious turns.  We would never have been able to find these walks on our own or have had the confidence to follow some of the paths without this guide.  The walks are varied and interesting and gave us one of the best walking holidays we have ever had

I purchased a CD on Gran Canary walks from the following site http://www.ramblingroger.com.  It is a very comprehensive production.  The layout is very clear and great use is made of colour. I have purchased every available book on walking in GC.  This one is definitely the best.  It even includes a walk on in the Puerto Rico Arguineguin area.

Since it is on CD, it offers you the opportunity to print out the walk/s you are interested in.  A single sheet of A4 is all that is required for each walk... light to carry... you can scribble/make notes on it or dump it when you get back home.

Met Roger and his wife Eileen on one occasion... lovely honest hospitable people with a great love for the island as a whole... fountains of knowledge on all thing GC.

While their business is connected with providing guided walks, they offer a free walk each week, think it is on Tuesday. It may be of interest to some of you visitors who may want a little bit of exercise and also get to see the real island and be accompanied by a person with an in-depth knowledge of the area.  Average fitness required

We have just returned our 2 weeks in Gran Canaria and thought you’d like to know that we found your walking guides really excellent.  We found the route descriptions were clear and the times very realistic for our pace.  We had a great 2 weeks of excellent hiking – the whole experience surpassed our expectations.

Tejeda proved to be an excellent base for the first week.  We stayed in Maspalomas for 4 days and Las Palmas for 4 days as well so we had a very good range of hikes in different parts of the island.

I’m pleased to say we managed fine using public transport only throughout our two weeks.  The last walk we did before returning home was the San Mateo circuit from your CD – fabulous!  We supplemented your guide with the Rother guide (also excellent) and the “another commercial guide” (not so impressed).

Hi Roger, just a email to thank you most sincerely for the walking guide.  We returned last Saturday from Gran Canaria, and we completed 7 of the circular walks and I was blown away by the beauty of Gran Canaria's mountains, the weather was great which really added to our enjoyment of the walks.

We would not have been able to access these without your guide so a very big thank you.  Exceptional value for money.  All the best

Máire

Roger - many thanks for the brilliant walks.  We did four:  nos 1 and 2 which were nice and close to our cave house in Artenara and nos 12 and 14 which were breathtaking - in more than one way!  12 was a real challenge, as you suggested, of our navigation skills from La Goleta (thank goodness for your GPS points and our compass) as well as of our scrambling skills - the old body is not as flexible as it used to be.  But I think this was our favourite.  Or maybe not... all were brilliant.  We will definitely return to Gran Can another year

Dear Roger and Eileen,  it was only yesterday that we managed to make the first walk from your series of Mountain Hikes and we must congratulate you on the very excellent way in which you describe the whole itinerary !

We were impressed and thank you for giving us so many new and interesting walks on Gran Canaria.  We did not take our GPS with us.  Had we done so, no doubt it would have been better still.

Many thanks again !  See you on Sunday

Greetings from the Czech Republic, we are back from the holidays.  In spite of the hot weather we did quite a lot of your walks and I thought you would appreciate some feedback, so here are some of our field notes.  Your guide is perfect, very detailed and accurate which was very helpful as we did not have a good map.

It was impossible to buy the recommended Kompass map in Maspalomas, we found it at the end of the holidays in a bookshop in San Mateo.  Most of the walks took us more time than you suggested, but we expected it – partly due to the weather, partly because the children needed more refreshment breaks.

Thank you very much again for your hiking guide, it is very practical and without it our holidays would have not been so nice and interesting as it would have been almost impossible to hike in the mountains without it.

We were much impressed by Gran Canaria and I hope we will be able to return there in the future - Many Thanks

Hi Roger and Eileen,  just a note to say how interesting and varied we found your walks.  As I mentioned before, having so many circular walks to choose from is a real bonus.

Keep up the good work.  It looks like there are a lot more round walks to be found.  It must be a time consuming job, as the ones we did would certainly have been difficult without your directions.  Thanks for adding the gps info, it is a good confidence aid when in the middle of the long walks.

Good luck with the walking guide volume 2.  What a great job!
