The ultimate guide for walks, hiking and mountain trekking on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, Spain

Gran Canaria is a paradise for hill walking in the Canaries, with inhabited cave villages, lake side walks, spectacular mountain scenery and wonderful flora & fauna especially in the Spring.  There are a great variety of hikes on outstanding trails, many of these are off-the-beaten-track and the climate is excellent for trekking.

Transport - Gran Canaria

This collection of my specially selected walks 'Don’t leave Gran Canaria without seeing it' includes 20 circular routes, and 5 routes from A to B that can be achieved with the local bus service, Global.  I have tried to cover as much of the island as possible in this collection.  I recommend the use of a hire car as it does give you much more freedom in the choice and timing of the hikes, however many can be done by using the local buses, which are cheap and reliable.  The Global bus company does have a website, so the timings of buses can be checked, but the timetables are not easy to understand.

The most important Bus Route is No.18, from Maspalomas to San Mateo via San Bartolome and Tejeda, and the main timings involve the 08.00 bus from Maspalomas, and the return buses are at 14.00 and 16.00 from San Mateo.

If the Global bus time table shows a change in these timings then the times I have used in the text on each walk will have changed also.

PLEASE NOTE - Important News as per 05/02/2010:

There are major changes to the No.18 bus route for at least the rest of 2010, due to the collapse of part of the GC60 during a thunderstorm on February 1st. The No.18 route will now run from Maspalomas to Ayacata as usual, then continue on the GC600 past Roque Nublo to Cruz de Tejeda, before continuing onto Tejeda and San Mateo. This means that all walks in the guide can still done using buses except for walk 7, the El Aserredor circle. Since the road closure there have been several changes to the timetable, so do check locally before using the Global No.18 bus service.

Full details can be found on the Global Bus company website.

In short buses now leave Maspalomas at 08.00, 11.00, 15.00 and 19.00 (18.00 on Sunday) every day and finish in Ayacata.

Buses leave Ayacata at 09.30, 12.30 and 17.00 every day except Sunday when the last 2 buses are at 16.30 and 19.30.

If you are using a car you must now drive as normal from Maspalomas to Ayacata on the GC60, then turn right at the Church, drive past Roque Nublo on the GC600, then just past La Cumbre restaurant turn left, then turning left again at Cruz de Tejeda to descend to Tejeda town.

Car hire is not expensive,  you can usually prebook a car for about £100 / €110 per week ( car hire links:  Hertz, AVIS, CICAR, Orlando ).

 Mountain road with great views

 - ‘Country lane driving’, mountain road with excellent views, Gran Canaria, Spain -

To enjoy driving in the mountains of Gran Canaria you must be happy with ‘country lane driving’, there are no motorways in the centre of the island, but lots of roads with many bends.

Most roads are well signposted and have crash barriers and in general the road surface is very good.

The majority of my 25 walks are within an hour or so of Maspalomas, but many are closer to the rural hotels.

Another transport option is the use of taxi’s, they are not very expensive, usually reliable, readily available in Maspalomas and other large towns.

Roger prides himself on keeping off tarmac as much as possible and also on providing you with the bus times you require to reach the start and get back from the end of each walk - essential details which are omitted from all walking books I have seen for this island
